Sioux Falls, South
Dakota is located near Big Sioux River. The glacial ice sheets that once lay
dormant in the area formed the Sioux quartzite bedrock that everyone enjoys.
Besides having experienced glacial movements, Sioux Falls was inhabited by the
Lakota and Dakota Indian tribes, who were nomadic hunters of bison.
In 1804, Lewis and
Clark ventured through the Sioux Falls, South Dakota region. John C. Fremont and
Joseph Nicollet also explored the Sioux Falls terrain. Other people who traveled
through Sioux Falls were Philander Prescott and James Allen.
In 1865, Fort
Dakota was built. The railroad arrived in Sioux Falls during 1880. During 1909,
the John Morrell meat packing plant sparked economic prosperity for the city.
Also encouraging financial growth was the airbase in 1942. During the 1960s, the
interstate was laid.
The post office
resided in the Old Barracks of Fort Dakota. The first postmaster was Edward
Broughton.
