National Register of Historic Places for Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Sioux Falls, South Dakota is located near Big Sioux River. The glacial ice sheets that once lay dormant in the area formed the Sioux quartzite bedrock that everyone enjoys. Besides having experienced glacial movements, Sioux Falls was inhabited by the Lakota and Dakota Indian tribes, who were nomadic hunters of bison.

In 1804, Lewis and Clark ventured through the Sioux Falls, South Dakota region. John C. Fremont and Joseph Nicollet also explored the Sioux Falls terrain. Other people who traveled through Sioux Falls were Philander Prescott and James Allen.

In 1865, Fort Dakota was built. The railroad arrived in Sioux Falls during 1880. During 1909, the John Morrell meat packing plant sparked economic prosperity for the city. Also encouraging financial growth was the airbase in 1942. During the 1960s, the interstate was laid.

The post office resided in the Old Barracks of Fort Dakota. The first postmaster was Edward Broughton.
